a bunch of people that look like me

I’m out in Colorado this week for a reunion with some family, and OFFICIALLY ON VACATION! I am practically the youngest in the bunch of the cousins & now that we are all grown, we barely are ever in the same place at once for anything as the families have spread out over the country. This is the most we have had together for awhile & I was named the official photog for our group picture. Check out the clan at Horsetooth reservoir & find me if you can. =)

The last time we were all out here was at least 15 years ago…check out how much our family has changed. I feel special that I now have the role that my Grandpa used to fill…running into the shot!

I like sundays.

Happy fathers day to all the dads out there, especially mine. Here are a couple pics of him from the past, first up with Keegan on his 3rd birthday.

And his second birthday:

And here he is on his wedding day, with his own dad:

He’s not just a dad, but  great Poppa, and a great son, constantly making trips out of state to check on his own mother. And Keegan is in luck, because with those hair genes, he won’t ever be bald!!

memos from motherhood: part 5

So you know how in the movies, when there is a cute scene of kids jumping on their parents in the morning? And every one is super-fun-happy? I don’t know about you, but a 35 pound kid breaking my back in the morning doesn’t get me up on the right side of the bed. Honestly, a cute, random, “You’re my best friend Mommy” or…a sing-songy “Its time to wake uuuuup” would do the trick. Just sayin.

I’m going to share some  recent Keeger tidbits along with new & old photos I have lying around my computer.

Keegan is obsessed with eating butter. Many a days I have found him with the squish-it in his room, with it sprayed on the wall. Let me explain, “squish-it” is the spray butter that literally has ” 0 grams” written next to every content listing…I have no idea what it is made of, I just know that I have to keep it REALLY high in the fridge these days. He always asks for butter on his food, and he will take huge bites of the stick of butter (I really think its probably margerine, but whatever) …or lick it, or grab a huge finger swipe out of it, if it is out for cooking. Yeah,…gross.

JBP_4165 copy
He also seems to have jars of peanut butter with spoons sticking out of it, hidden into his room. I have caught him sneaking it in there QUITE a few times. Thats not quite as gross but still messy.

STORY. Ok, so he is also obsessed with the…get this…fuzzy belt that is on my fuzzy white robe. You know those white robes we all got at the Love Affair Workshop? Well, he steals the belt, and plays with it as much as he can. As a matter of fact, he BROKE the HOOK OFF the WALL yesterday in order to get it down. And what does he do with this fuzzy belt?

  1. He pretends like he is fishing with it, off the top of my high bed
  2. He calls it his snake
  3. He pretends it is a glamour scarf
  4. He plays tug of war with me…(he doesn’t know I’m just trying to PUT IT AWAY)
  5. and he freaks out if I try to put it away

Ok, but really, the first time I saw him use it to go fishing, I cracked up.

Its also really funny when he tries to say something mean. He just ends up talking jibberish, and pointing at me. But he likes to sing along to the music I listen to, and if he doesn’t know the words, he will lipsinc to words that don’t exists, so he looks like he is talking chinese but…nothing is coming out.

RECENTLY he has been running around the house talking crazy pretend,..something about wonder pets?! I’m sure this is some animal TV show that Gram lets him watch. The pretend play is hilarious to watch and listen to. He talks in different voices and chases imaginary animals and ALLIGATORS around the house.

_jbp8710_1 copy
BUT NOW, since I let him watch the Charlie Brown dvds that I have….he is reciting Charlie Brown Christmas randomly as he plays. “Listen up script girl!” “You’ve got to have respect for your director!” its too funny.

Keegan tends to tell people stories when is  talking to them on the phone, or if he is talking to a person we meet…like..”I did this today and I saw a policeman and a firefighter engine and it went woooowoooo and then we got coffee. And I went on a trip with Jacob.” He will say they happened TODAY when they have either happened weeks ago, or have yet to happen…but he still gets an “aww you are so cute” from the nice ladies at the bank.

Guess who finally knows their colors. He was so off on these for awhile, and he could say them, but not match them…even though he knew all of his letters by the time he was probably 18 months, he JUST got his colors down- for example he knew he wanted to ride the green dragon at the Carnival this weekend:

I guess I’m not one of those smothering Moms. I try to let Keegan do as much as he can, on his own. I challenge him to do things he doesn’t think he can do,..and then he is so proud of himself when he can. I guess thats what happens when you have a child before you’re really truely ready (who is anyway, really!)- you let them take care of themselves as much as you can.

I no longer have to weasel this kid into his carseat. One day, I said, buckle yourself. And he did. Freedom, I tell you, FREEDOM!! Just like the one day I told him to dress himself. He might accidently wear pajamas half the time but I’m all about our individual independence. Both of us. =)

Oh, and on a grosser note: We have made touchdown people! This child is using potties big and small by himself. Only slight regressions once in a while….but I’m golden! Hooray! It only took….9 months.

IMG_0758 copy
AND MY KID IS PERFECT BECAUSE: he will randomly say, “I just love you” or “You’re my best friend” or “I love my mommy”…WITHOUT PROMPTING. Sometimes when he is fully asleep and I have just moved him to a favored bed. (which sometimes is the floor of my office….curled up with my shootsac!).

search for the perfect wedding shoe: part one

I swear that photographers have a weird thing for shoes. We are ALWAYS photographing them as a detail, or a unique way to incorporate someone’s personality into a shot..or to pump up the fashion factor. Just ask Rachel, my bride from this weekend. I was obsessed with her red shoes. Bows even,…don’t get me started. I’m sure they will be in part three of this blog-series.

This wedding season has started out with quite a few new editions to my walk-in [shoe] closet. Side-note: I have a whole side devoted to shoes…ahh, the single life! I bought about four pairs for myself on my birthday in April….which I think has been my biggest shoe splurge to date. I am way more picky about designer goods when it comes to handbags, so although my shoe taste isn’t fully into the high end market, I am fully satisfied with DSW, and I am proud of myself for graduating past Payless where I begun my collection back in the high school days. My red flats from there can be seen here from an earlier post….I have had many the compliments on them! However…they are getting worn out especially after Scarlett borrowed them for her big date in Vegas…haha!! While the trusty flats add a flair of my brand with the vibrant red, the soles get sticky and my toes clostrophobic after standing all day. A little blistered even.

So it was time to test out a new pair for Drew & Amber’s wedding in May. I went bold. I went pink, even. And I lucked out in a way- you see, I like to coordinate a bit with the wedding colors when I work…and this wedding was full-out pastels so I was covered. Generally my color scheme of choice is a sleek black & white,…maybe a pop of red, but I was feeling colorful to wear a baby blue ruffled shirt, white bermuda shorts, a tan cropped jacket (rain!) and these bad boys:

JEB_6049 copy

Or shall I say “girls?”. There is nothing boyish about those lovely leather ruffles. I was dying to wear a heel since I was showing off my calves anyway,…you know that heels do wonderful things for a woman’s angles & curves. ;) My second shooter so kindly pointed out the nice color tone in the pink and how it is alllllmost a nude or flesh. I have never been a pink girl. Ever. Except for that one time…when it was a part of the color scheme for my wedding but I blame that on the pregnancy hormones. For me to had been craving a pink shoe when I bought these was so odd, but the three other colors of this style just didn’t suite me at the time. Pink it is.

The review:

Initially easily comfortable, but I knew better than to wear heels for a wedding, and I brought backups. Madden Girl heels are well constructed I must say, I have at least three or four pairs now, because they are notably easy to wear & walk in. When going for heels, always get a platform under your toes. But, by the time I heard we had to walk to golf course to get to the spot I spied out,…I ditched these because I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep up with A&D’s brisk & excited pace. [BIG thanks to Kathy at Fore Lakes for breaking the rules and bringing us carts for the ride back!!] And…..I think I even had a blister on the top of each of my big toes from the peeptoe design.

So by the time the reception rolled around I was sporting these, which I like to call my Easter shoes because they look like a 7 year old should be wearing them to church. I picked them up at the midwest’s favorite, Meijer, while getting groceries. I picked them up because I knew they would come in handy with summer weddings. They looked promising, but proved to be clostrophobic….and again..sticky and unsupportive. I guess I needed a size up. I’m tall and already wear a nine, so I hate to get tens because it seems gigantic and unfeminine. But, mental note for 9.5s with flats from now on.

JEB_6056 copy

Plain, and absolutely flat but they got the job done. And I must say, the closely resemble what the bride was wearing that day anyway.

Tune in the coming weeks for parts 2 & 3, from the June weddings!

anticipation

In case you missed it, Aletha featured me again on the Pearls events blog yesterday for Michelle & Brandon’s wedding- check it out here! But today I can’t wait to shoot Rachel & Andy’s wedding in Brighton & the celebrations in Ann Arbor- here are a couple shots from this Florida couple’s engagement session near my home studio last fall:

We will start the day with getting to know your camera, shooting tips, and then head-shots. Then we will do a shoot together, and I will teach as we go. Then it will probably be time for dinner on me, and we will gather in my cozy living room  or office…with my Macs to go over post-processing, workflow, photoshop….that sort of thing. =) I also plan on dishing out a TON of resources to you that made a difference for me. I suggest this workshop for those getting started with a digital SLR, someone making the jump into their own business, or someone that needs to get that boost with their images & developing their brand.
